Homunculi are what grows on aceans if ever they need anything like a human mind or personality. Simply put, they are human fetuses whose brains are fully developed in the cognitive areas.
The acaeans realized that it´s hightly inefficient to fully develop a human when they only need to grow a tiny section of their anatomy.
-Some samples of aging and damage progress and some random made-on-the-spot suggestions for body shapes the homunculi could be attached to.
