At this point I probably have more drawings of verunasi than any other creature either real or fictional, but none of them clearly shows how they are colored.. thing people even in the studio have asked more than once. The Verunas were an extremly ancient race by the time they meet humans for the first time, having been around building civilizations on diferent planets for some good millions of years. Theresicne they have achived a wide degree of diversity, covering a couple of species, a good bunch of subespecies and a miriad of ethinicities. Insolation on distant planets and an often genetically-driven society, has lead them to divesify in as many colors as canaries. The patterns and colors found on the verunas includes, but is not limited to, those show on this picture and any combination of them.

Absolutely love these - thinking of starting a Tyranid army in Warhammer 40K - this is a perfect reference sheet for me for colour schemes, as I actually want them to look mildly realistic rather than using an outrageous colour scheme. I particularly like the Cardinal Red, and also the Calico - Great work!
hmm, how exactly their eugenics include skin patterns interrests me, consdiering they cannot see in the traditional sense. wouldnt colours be meaningless to them?
also i wonder, how will we be represented if one chooses to play a veruna in game? Will we get one of those portraits weve seen for the humans?
Great question! color display is not limited to the perseption of the wearer, many completely blind animals have striking color patterns (think deep sea creatures of bright red and shifting colors). Verunas were small on their home planet, but grew to be dangerously armed (with technology) so it makes sense that much like poisonous small animals on earth they would display bright colors to avoid an unwanted fight with giant watching predators. Evolutionary explanations aside, from a cultural perspective verunas are well aware that other species can see the chromatic spectrum. They have long since developed the technology to do it themselves (much like humans have infrared goggles and X-ray devices) they can implant into their bodies and connect to their nervous system. The device and implants are not expensive or rare (you will see plenty of concepts with eye-like deviced or implants)and their cultural attitud of leting other races know how superior they feel has led them to favor some interesting color patterns enhanced from their evolutionary hue.
i start to like the vernuas, at first ive pictured them as beeing "not caring" for the little races. i mean it would kind of make sense since the verunas are physically, intellectually and technologically superior to the other spacefaring races. But it seems they go in a rather interresting direction.
I supose they would look down on any other racer that does not perfect their genetics such as they do. then again. Could be an interresting dynamic with the aceans. woudlnt that be a natural inspiration for the verunas? since i heavily doubt that they would have any moral obligations to... anything.
as for the eye like devices. One of the forum avatars has some contraption strapped to its head with spheric attachements, is that such a thing? Im interrested in the cultural perception of those, reading the canon on the firstborn. Wouldnt using this technology be considered as a sign of weakness by the verunas?

...and does it have eyes?
